Backlash is the new series by Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil.
Following on from his "retouched" Aubusson tapestries, the artist continues his work of reactivating
the past through image-objects that he rescues from oblivion and confronts them with our present. With Backlash, he chooses Le Petit Parisien, a popular newspaper from the late 19th century, as his medium.
Its Illustrated Literary Supplement embodies a pivotal moment in the history of the press: one where the drawn
image still dominated, while photography had not yet taken over.
By covering these old front pages with gold paint, Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil accomplishes a gesture that is both
radical and singular. The sensationalist narratives of the time, fueled by collective fears and heightened fantasies,
are transfigured into mysterious, almost sacred surfaces. Gold, used as an alchemical material, acts with
unprecedented symbolic power: it veils as much as it reveals, erasing while illuminating. With this series, Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil once again asserts his impressive ability to render the past intensely
contemporary, while opening up a poetic field where the invisible reveals itself.
