« HORS-SOL » PROJET INSITU | Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil
SORBONNE ARTGALLERY, PARIS

Since the mid-1990s, Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil has been working to reveal the invisible structures that shape our relationship with a reality that is always already mediated. An artist ever on the lookout, he relentlessly questions the construction of the image within its political context. Visibility/invisibility, light/darkness, memory/forgetfulness, what we know/what we think we know, evoking without showing, speaking without narrating? these are all guiding principles for understanding his works, which give form to the codes that organise the flow of images. Whilst the artist?s early concerns were primarily focused on new cartographies and the security obsessions of information and surveillance systems, and the social control of the public sphere, his work has, in recent years, taken a more metaphorical turn. In his conception of life, reality is but a thin veil concealing a world infinitely richer than the one our eyes behold on a daily basis. The unilateral exercise of power and the question of perspective are recurring themes in the artist?s work. A significant part of his work concerns communication technologies, offering a critical reflection on their uses.

Born in 1968 and living in Paris, Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil has, since the mid-1990s, been questioning the construction of images, viewed within their public and political context. Whilst his early concerns centred primarily on the history of power and information technologies, particularly in situations of conflict and war (as evidenced by his cartographies of skies prior to military bombardments of civilians, evoking those moments preceding or following historical traumas), his work has, in recent years, taken a more metaphorical and programmatic turn.

Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil is the winner of the HSBC Prize for Photography (2004), the Meurice Prize for Contemporary Art (2010), the 1% Art Market Prize (2022) and a former resident at the Villa Medici (2010). His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at institutions and museums in France and abroad (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nice; Espace de l?Art Concret, Mouans-Sartoux; MACRO Testaccio in Rome, MAC VAL, the Ricard Foundation, the Palais de Tokyo, the Caixa Foundation, the Swiss Institute in New York, etc.). His works are held in major collections at contemporary art museums, foundations and private collections.
